When the storm hits, your number one priority is safety. Whether you’re riding out the hurricane in your home or a shelter, being prepared — and staying calm — makes all the difference.
At Preferred Insurance, we want to make sure you have the peace of mind to focus on your family, not your policy. Here’s what to do while the winds are howling and the rain is pounding.
🕯️ Power Out? Stay Ready
- Use flashlights, not candles, to reduce fire risk
- Turn off major appliances to avoid damage when power returns
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
- Don’t use a generator indoors or near windows or doors — carbon monoxide is deadly
📻 Stay Informed
- Use a battery-powered weather radio or tune in to local news stations
- Follow updates from the National Hurricane Center and local emergency services
- Be prepared to evacuate if instructed — don’t wait until roads are impassable
🧒 Keep Kids and Pets Calm
- Create a safe, quiet space with snacks, games, or music
- Reassure them with calm, confident behavior — your mood sets the tone
- If you evacuated with pets, keep them in a crate or on a leash at all times
📞 Communication Tips
- Text, don’t call — cell networks can get overloaded
- Let loved ones outside the area know you’re safe
- Use walkie-talkies or battery-powered radios if service goes down
🧾 Already Have Damage?
It’s okay to take quick photos or videos if it’s safe, but don’t go outside during the storm. Wait until winds have fully calmed and it’s clear.
