The winds have died down, the skies have cleared β but your job isnβt over yet. After a hurricane hits Florida, the hours and days that follow are just as important as the days before landfall.
At Preferred Insurance, weβre here to help you navigate recovery with confidence. Here’s what to do after the storm to keep your family safe, protect your property, and make the claims process as smooth as possible.
π§― Safety First
- Stay indoors until local authorities say itβs safe
- Watch out for downed power lines, gas leaks, or unstable structures
- Donβt walk or drive through flooded areas
- Use generators only outdoors and away from open windows
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby if youβre using candles or lanterns
πΈ Document the Damage
Before you clean up or move anything, take photos and videos of the damage:
- Roof, siding, gutters, windows
- Fences, garages, and sheds
- Interior water damage, floors, walls, and ceilings
- Damaged personal property (appliances, furniture, electronics)
Make a list of everything damaged β this will be key for your claim.
π Donβt Get Scammed
Unfortunately, storm chasers and shady contractors come out in full force after a hurricane. Protect yourself:
- Donβt sign anything you donβt understand
- Never give full payment up front
- Ask to see a contractorβs license and insurance
- Call us before you sign any Assignment of Benefits (AOB) forms
Weβve got your back β if youβre not sure, just call us first.
π§Ύ Filing a Claim
Need help starting your claim? Weβre here for that too.
- Have your photos and damage list ready
- Call your carrier or contact us and weβll walk you through it
- Keep all receipts if you need to make emergency repairs
- Take notes during every call β dates, names, and what was said
